Timeline of Major Events

1981 Founded on 1st January as the Institute of Classical Indian Dance (ICID) with the objective of promoting knowledge, understanding and appreciation for Indian classical dance.

1985 Established the Trainee Dance Animateur Scheme with the support of East Midlands Arts (EMA) and Leicester City and County Councils with an initial intake of twelve enthusiastic dancers.

1987 Began an annual series of showcase performances at major theatre venues, promoting and providing a artistic platform for talented and up-coming young students of dance.

Kathak Residency project with Pandit Sunderlal Gangani, one of the foremost exponents of the Jaipur gharana lasting a total of six months.

1989 The first students passed the Institute's 6-year Diploma in Kathak dance.

Presented 'Dances of India' at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to a rapturous reception.

Presented a major production of the Ugly Duckling, with a cast of 50 dancers of various abilities, portraying this famous fable through dance and drama.

1990 Kathak Residency with Pandit Durgalal, one of India's most respected and dynamic Kathak performers for six weeks, during which over 25 students benefitted from masterclass training.

1991 Performed Six Seasons of India at Leicester's Haymarket Theatre, involving more than one hundred dancers young and old.

1993 Toured Dance Double Bill nationally with a company of twelve Kathak dancers all trained at the Institute.

1994 The Institute takes four talented Kathak students to the Kadamb Institute in Ahmedabad, where they work with reknowned choreographer Kumudini Lakhia on the production Indra Dhanusha, based on the Bhagavadgita.

1995 Four talented students obtained their Diploma from the Institute.

Kathak Residency with Kumudini Lakhia lasting one month and encompassing Kathak technique and choreography.

1997 Attained charitable status.

Took a troupe of 50 performers to London's South Bank as part of its Summer 'Ballroom Blitz' Festival, involving a full-day's programme of dance and music performances, discussion-groups, workshops and lecture-demonstrations.

1998 Official launch of the Centre for Indian Classical Dance (CICD) at the Rowans Centre in Leicester, attended by 100 invited guests who were treated to a special performance by Rohini Bhate and students of the Centre.

Kathak Residency project with Rohini Bhate from Pune, the foremost exponent of bhava, during which 20 students benefitted from her expertise over one month.

Two further students obtain the Centre's Diploma, bringing the total to eight successful candidates.

1999 Kathak Residency with Jagdish Gangani from Baroda, India and musicians, lasting for a period of four weeks.

2000 Produced and performed Vyom as part of Leicester's Diwali Millennium Festival celebrations, involving the collaboration of a choreographer from Pune, India and a cast of sixty Kathak and Bharatnatyam students and professional dancers. Two very well-received performances were held at Leicester's Phoenix Theatre and Loughborough Town Hall.

2001 As part of the 'Year of the Artist Award' produced Flaming Feet, a unique collaboration of Irish and Kathak dance and music performed throughout Leicestershire.

Commissioned a consultant to undertake audience development research for South Asian dance.

Commissioned a choreographer to produce Five Senses, a an abstract contemporary dance item involving four regional South Asian dancers.

2002 Awarded RALP funding for organisational development, dance training and showcase performances in Kathak and Bharatnatyam in the East Midlands region.
