Introduction

CICD is one of the leading South Asian dance organisations in the UK. Its pioneering development over the last 25 years in Leicester has helped to put South Asian dance on the British cultural map, and it now intends to expand its artistic work in the East Midlands region by working in association with individual artists, arts and cultural organisations, venue promoters and arts officers in local authorities. It already has strong links with Leicester City Council, East Midlands Arts, Arts Training Central, Foundation for Community Dance and various arts and community organisations at local, regional and national levels, and it intends to further consolidate and extend this networking and partnership arrangement for the development of South Asian dance.

CICD has a long history of development, originating as a training institution for South Asian dance and since having expanded its role to various other activities such as advanced training to talented young people, training trainers, and residencies with international visiting artists, networking, lobbying, advising and information and resource provision. The Centre was recently awarded RALP funding from EMA for a three-year programme to develop training projects for talented young dancers across the East Midlands region and to work with venue promoters across the six counties to establish regular showcase performances. At the end of the third year of the RALP programme, CICD also intends to develop a national South Asian dance festival comprising a central conference, performances and debates on issues concerning South Asian dance as a whole.
