This spiritual and ethereal Kathak production was conceived by Nilima Devi for the Company in
India during 1993. It is based on the abstract philosophy of the Bhagavadgita, the famous Indian
scripture which describes the experience of oneness with an eternal, absolute force through one's
chosen medium. At the time, this was the first Kathak performance ever to seek to interpret and
portray the philosophy of the Bhagavadgita. It presents the dramatic range of human experiences
involved in the journey that one undertakes in finding and eventually realising the oneness of
humanity and divinity.
These themes retain contemporary relevance in the modern world, in which
humanity is confused and bewildered and desires enlightenment, just as Arjuna, the warrior hero
of the Bhagavadgita, required it hundreds of years ago in the midst of an epic war. This is an
uplifting, inspiring work, involving dazzling contemporary choreography, stunning costumes and
production values and an evocatic, dramatic score.
